how do you tell the difference between him being stressed and him actually hating you rn
Asked by figuring_it_out
ok so lately my husband has just been so cold, like short answers, no eye contact, barely touches me, and my brain keeps going straight to "he hates me" mode. but then i try to talk myself down like maybe it's just work stress or he's tired or whatever normal thing people go through. honestly i think most marriages hit these weird flat stretches where you feel like roommates and not partners, so i'm trying not to spiral over one bad week or month.
has anyone else gone through a phase where you genuinely convinced yourself your husband hated you and it turned out to be something totally unrelated to you? and if it IS more than just a rough patch, how did you even start figuring that out without turning it into a huge confrontation. i don't wanna accuse him of something that isn't even true, but i also don't wanna just ignore my gut if there's actually something real going on. how do you tell the difference

most helpful firstoh i've been in that exact spiral, brain just latches onto worst case and won't let go. honestly stress and hating you look SO similar from the outside, short answers, no touch, checked out eyes, that's basically the same behavior whether it's a work deadline or actual resentment. the difference usually isn't in the coldness itself, it's in whether there's any warmth still leaking through anywhere. does he still text you dumb stuff during the day, still want you around even if he's distant, still reach for you when he's not thinking about it. if yes, probably just full and overwhelmed. if it's a total shutdown everywhere, that's different. and instead of "do you hate me" try something soft like "hey you've felt far away lately, what's going on with you" not about the marriage at all first. see how he responds to being asked about himself before you even bring up the two of you.
ok honestly this is such a common spiral, your brain latches onto "he hates me" because it's scarier but somehow easier to sit with than "i don't know what's going on." stress and hating you look almost identical from the outside, short answers, no eye contact, low touch, that's just what a shut-down nervous system looks like whether it's work or something between you two. the difference usually isn't in the behavior, it's in whether it's aimed at everything or just you. is he checked out with friends, kids, hobbies too, or is it specifically cold when it's you two alone. that's your clue. as for figuring it out without a big confrontation, don't open with "do you hate me," open with something soft like "hey you've seemed far away lately, everything ok in your head" and just watch how he responds, defensive vs relieved tells you a lot. give it a little time but don't sit in silence forever either.
yes to the 'aimed at everything vs just you' thing, that's the real tell honestly. also watch what happens when something good happens to you, if he's still stressed but still lights up a little for your wins, that's not hate talking. hang in there amy, you're not crazy for wanting clarity here.
girl yes, been there, and my brain went to the exact same dramatic place. here's the honest tell: stress makes him distant AND distracted, like he's checked out of everything, work, hobbies, you, sleep, all of it. actual relationship trouble usually looks different, more like he avoids YOU specifically, or gets weirdly defensive when you get close. that distinction matters more than the coldness itself. so don't skip the low key check in just because you're scared of a confrontation, there's a whole middle ground between accusing him and pretending you don't notice anything. try something soft like "hey you've seemed kinda far away lately, everything ok in your head?" that's not an ambush, that's just... love with eyes open. watch how he responds, not just what he says. relief and softening usually means stress. more shutting down usually means there's more to it. trust your gut but give it a fair chance to be wrong first.
