husband picked the game over our date night again, am i overreacting
Asked by here_to_vent_30
so we had this date night planned for like two weeks, nothing fancy just dinner at the little italian place we like, and i even got a sitter lined up for the kids. well his team had a playoff game that night and he just... didn't tell me he still wanted to go until like an hour before. i said we could still go and he could catch the score after but he was so distracted the whole time checking his phone under the table that i just felt like i was sitting there by myself lol. when i said something after he acted like i was making a big deal out of nothing, like "it's literally one game a year." idk maybe i am being sensitive but it's not really about the game, it's more that i feel like i come second to it sometimes. anyone else's husband do this? how do you even bring it up without starting a whole fight over sports of all things

most helpful firstyou're not overreacting, and honestly the game is almost beside the point. what you're actually describing is a night that was supposed to be about the two of you, where he was physically there but not really there. that sting is real even when the thing pulling him away is small and dumb like a playoff score. i think the fix isn't "no more sports" it's naming the actual feeling, something like "i don't care about the game, i care that i planned something for us and felt like an afterthought." that's harder for him to wave off as you being dramatic about football. maybe next time you also just say up front, hey if this game matters, let's move date night, i'd rather reschedule than compete with your phone. it protects the time instead of setting it up to lose.
not overreacting, and you already said the real thing: it's not the game, it's feeling like an afterthought. tell him that exact sentence, not "you always pick the game," because that one invites defensiveness and this one is just true and hard to argue with. also name what you actually want next time, like phone away or reschedule honestly instead of half-showing-up. the sitter and reservation deserved better than a distracted date.
no, you're not overreacting. the game isn't really the thing, like you said, it's the phone under the table while you're sitting right there. that's the part that stings.
when you bring it up, maybe leave the game out of it entirely. just tell him what it felt like to plan something, get the sitter, sit across from him, and still feel alone. not "you care more about sports than me," just "i missed you even though you were there." that's harder for him to argue with than a debate about priorities.
and maybe next time, if a game's happening, just move the date instead of competing with it. not because you're wrong to want his attention, but because nobody wins that split-screen version of a night out. you deserve the whole him, even just once every couple weeks.
