I saw a flirty text on my husband's phone. He says it's nothing. Am I overreacting?
Asked by stubborn_brain_36
It was a coworker. The message wasn't explicit but it was… flirty, a little too familiar. When I asked, he got defensive and said I'm being paranoid and it's completely innocent. Maybe it is. But my gut is uneasy and now I feel crazy for even bringing it up. How do I figure out if I'm overreacting or if this is actually a problem?

most helpful firstTwo things can be true: it might be genuinely innocent, and your unease still matters. The tell isn't the text, it's his reaction. "Paranoid" and defensiveness instead of "I get why that looked bad, let me reassure you" is the part worth paying attention to. You're allowed to say: "I'm not accusing you. I'm telling you it made me uneasy and I need us to be able to talk about it without you making me the problem."
counterpoint though — some guys go defensive not because they're guilty, but because being accused (even softly) feels awful and their pride kicks in before their empathy does. doesn't excuse it, but before deciding his reaction is 'the tell,' maybe ask him why he got defensive instead of just judging the defensiveness itself.
Playing the other side fairly — being questioned about your integrity when you feel innocent genuinely does sting, and some people go defensive from hurt, not guilt. So don't treat defensiveness alone as proof. But healthy people can move through the sting to "I hear you, and I don't want you feeling this way." If he can't get there at all, that's the real signal.
agreed. one flirty text is a conversation, not a verdict. how he handles the conversation tells you far more than the text did.
