should i just tell my husband how much i actually spend or nah
Asked by here_to_vent_05
ok so i have this amazon habit that is honestly out of control lol and i keep separate money for it (like babysitting money, some side stuff i sell online) but every time i think about just telling him the real number my stomach drops. its not even that were broke or anything, we're fine, but i KNOW hed give me that look and start doing math out loud lol. hes not controlling or anything hes actually really chill about money normally, i think thats what makes me feel worse bc he trusts me and im just... not saying anything. i keep telling myself im not lying im just not bringing it up which i know is kind of the same thing if im honest w myself lol. so do i just rip the bandaid off and tell him the actual total or is it ok to kind of ease into it, like tell him a version of it thats close enough. anyone else done this and it blew up bigger later bc you waited too long? or did it end up being a total non issue and i built it up in my head for nothing

most helpful firstthe stomach drop is telling you something worth listening to. you already said it yourself, not bringing it up is its own kind of not-telling. and the fact that he's chill about money and still trusts you, that's the part i'd pay attention to. easing in with a 'close enough' number usually just means having the hard conversation twice, once now and once later when the real number surfaces some other way. rip it off. tell him it's your own money you're spending, not asking permission, just wanting to not carry it alone anymore. most guys aren't doing math out loud because they're mad, they're doing it because they're surprised and trying to catch up in real time. give him a second to get there before you decide how he's going to react.
agree with the rip-the-bandaid part. one thing though: pick a calm moment, not mid-argument about something else. numbers land better when he's not already defensive about a different thing. tell him straight, let him go quiet for a minute, don't fill that silence for him. that's usually the part people mess up.
honestly, the stomach-drop is the tell here. it's less about the amazon total and more about the gap between what he thinks is true and what's actually true, and gaps like that tend to grow, not shrink, the longer you leave them. easing into a 'close enough' number usually just delays the same conversation and adds a second layer to untangle later.
zoom out ten years: the thing that erodes trust isn't spending money on stuff you like, it's finding out someone's been managing what you know. he sounds like the kind of guy who can handle a real number way better than he can handle feeling kept in the dark.
rip it off, but frame it as 'here's what i actually spend, i've been avoiding telling you and i want that to stop' rather than a confession. that framing usually lands as honesty, not guilt.
yeah this is spot on. the gap is the real issue, not the total. i'd just add — don't over-apologize when you tell him, that can make it feel bigger than it is. one clean convo, real number, then move forward together on a plan. you got this.
