Why does my husband go quiet when he's stressed instead of talking to me?

Asked by always_the_one_who65
We've been married six years and I've noticed a pattern — the second work gets heavy or money's tight, he just goes quiet. Not angry, just gone. One-word answers, phone for hours. When I ask what's wrong he says he's fine, just tired. I'm not trying to interrogate him, I just feel shut out and it's starting to make me anxious about us. How do I get him to let me in without pushing him further away?

Quiet usually isn't rejection — for a lot of guys it's how we self-regulate before we have the words. The mistake is filling his silence with your worst-case story. Try naming what you see without a demand attached: "I notice you go quiet when work's heavy. I'm not asking you to fix it, I just don't want to guess." Then let it sit. Pushing harder usually gets you less.
yes to all of this. i'd add - watch what happens right after he comes back to you, even a little. that's the window. if you can meet him with zero pressure in that moment, he learns talking to you is safe, not another thing to manage. takes repetition but it really does shift over time.
Worth flipping this for a second — is it possible the silence IS the message, and you two just process differently? Some people talk to think, some go inward and surface later. If he genuinely resets after a few hours and comes back, that might not be a wall, it might just be his pace.
this is a good point. asking him what he actually needs in those moments (space first, talk later?) instead of assuming can change everything
