Found some flirty texts on his phone, he swears it's nothing - how do I know if I'm overreacting?

Okay so backstory real quick - I wasn't even snooping, his phone was just sitting there and a text popped up from a coworker that made me raise an eyebrow. Went back and found more, nothing like super explicit but definitely flirty, lots of 😉 and "miss talking to you" type stuff. I brought it up calm, not screaming or anything, and he says they're just close friends and I'm reading into it.
Here's the thing - my gut is doing that thing where it just KNOWS something's off, but I also don't want to be the jealous wife who blows up a normal friendship over nothing. He hasn't lied about anything else that I know of, he's generally a good guy. But those messages just don't sit right with me and his "it's nothing" answer isn't really... answering anything, you know?
Has anyone dealt with this and actually figured out where the line is? Like how do you tell the difference between your gut being right and your gut just being anxious? I want to handle this the right way, not torch my marriage over a misunderstanding but also not ignore a real red flag. Would love to hear how other people worked through this one.

most helpful firstHere's an honest take from the guy side - "it's nothing" is what we say when we know it's not quite nothing but don't want to deal with the conversation. If it were truly nothing, most guys would actually explain it - who she is, why the texts, why he hasn't mentioned her before. Brushing you off instead of answering is the actual red flag, more than the emojis themselves.
Your gut isn't being crazy here. Anxious gut spirals with no evidence and no specific trigger. Yours has an actual text thread. That's different.
I'd go back, not with anger, but tell him "reading into it" doesn't work for you - you need him to actually address it. Ask direct questions: does she know he's married, would he be fine if you texted this way with a guy, can you see the rest of the thread. Watch if he gets defensive or if he actually engages. That'll tell you more than the texts did.
