How do I get my husband to actually put his phone down and look at me?
Asked by need_perspective
ok so my husband is a great guy, i'm not trying to bash him here, but lately it feels like i'm competing with a screen for his attention and i'm losing lol. we'll be sitting on the couch "together" and he's scrolling reddit or watching some youtube video with headphones in, and i'll tell him something and get a total blank stare like he heard zero words i said. even at dinner the phone's face up next to his plate. i've mentioned it a couple times, kinda jokingly, like "earth to you" type comments, but nothing really changes for more than a day.
i don't wanna be the naggy wife who's constantly on him about it, but i also miss actually talking to my husband instead of the top of his head. has anyone actually turned this around without it becoming a huge fight? like what worked for you to get your husband present again without making it a whole guilt trip thing? genuinely just want us back to being a team instead of me vs. his phone.

most helpful firstyeah the joking comments won't do much, guys tune those out fast, i know cuz i've done it lol. what actually works is picking a real moment, not mid-scroll, and just saying it straight. something like "hey i miss talkin to you, can we do phones down at dinner and couch time?" no jokes, no jabs, just honest. then make it a team thing, not a you problem. maybe you both toss phones in a basket at dinner, even yours. guys respond better when it's not a rule being handed down, it's a thing you're doing together. also gotta say it once, calm, and let it land instead of repeating it every few days, that starts feeling like nagging even if it ain't. give it a real shot for like two weeks before deciding it didn't work.
ok first, you're not being naggy, you're being ignored lol, there's a difference. the joking "earth to you" thing isn't landing because it's easy to brush off as a joke. what actually moves the needle is naming it once, clearly, not as a jab: "hey i miss talking to you, can we do phone-free dinner and like 20 min on the couch as our thing?" make it a we-project, not a you-problem. then build in something to fill that space, an actual conversation starter, a show you watch together, whatever, because he's not choosing the phone over you exactly, he's choosing it over nothing to do. also praise the good moments loudly, don't just flag the bad ones. consistency matters more than intensity here, little repeated asks beat one big blowup. you got this, seriously.
here's another way to look at it: the joking hints might actually be letting him off the hook without him realizing it. "earth to you" lands as a bit, not a request, so his brain files it under banter, not "my wife needs something from me." you're being considerate by not wanting to nag, but there's a version of this where being clearer isn't nagging at all, it's just honest.
What if instead of managing his behavior in the moment, you named the actual thing once, calmly, outside of dinner or couch time? Something like "I miss talking to you, can we do phone-free dinners" is a request he can actually act on, versus a comment he has to decode. Also worth asking yourself if you've told him specifically what presence looks like to you, because guys often genuinely don't clock headphones as a wall the way you experience it.
