Is it actually a big deal that my husband scrolls his phone every night before bed?

Asked by hungry_wife_69
Every night after we put the kids down, my husband ends up on his phone for like an hour, hour and a half, just scrolling reddit or watching random videos. We don't really talk much in that window anymore and I miss it, but I'm trying to figure out if this is one of those things that feels huge in the moment but honestly doesn't matter much in the bigger picture of a marriage. We're 11 years in, he's a good husband, present dad, we're not fighting or anything. I guess I'm asking - has anyone else gone through a phase like this and had it resolve itself over time? Or is this the kind of small thing that quietly turns into a bigger distance later if you don't address it early. Trying to look at this with some perspective instead of just reacting to the annoyance of it.

okay here's the thing — it's not really about the phone, it's about the missing hour and a half where you two used to connect. that's not you overreacting, that's you noticing something real. and you're right that it CAN resolve on its own... but usually only if someone names it. phones are just really good at filling silence nobody's actively protecting. you clearly already have the good stuff — present dad, no fighting, 11 years in and still paying attention to the relationship's pulse. that's huge. so this isn't a crisis, it's a maintenance moment. i'd bring it up light, not accusatory: "hey i miss our evenings, can we carve out even 20 minutes phone-free before the scroll happens?" most guys aren't choosing reddit over you, they're just on autopilot after a long day. named early = easy fix. ignored for two years = actual distance. you're catching it at the good stage, that's the whole ballgame.
yes this, the autopilot part especially. my husband isn't choosing his phone over me either, he's just fried and it's the easiest thing to zone out to. once i said it out loud instead of just sighing about it, he actually felt kinda relieved someone named it lol. small ask, big difference
It's not huge, but it's also not nothing - and the fact you miss him is worth listening to. These phone habits rarely resolve on their own just from time passing, they usually shift when something replaces them. So instead of framing it as a talk about his phone, try picking one specific night thing that's just yours two, like tea on the porch or a show you watch together before the scrolling starts. Naming a time slot works better than asking him to just "be more present" in general. Most guys aren't checked out on purpose, it's just the easiest default when nothing else is claiming that hour. Sounds like your marriage has a good foundation, so this is a small course correction, not a crisis. Just don't let a year go by without saying something.
okay so honestly? i don't think this is a small annoying thing OR a huge red flag, i think it's just... the thing that happens when the kids finally go down and everyone's brain is fried and the phone is the easiest lowest effort escape. that part is normal. what stood out to me in what you wrote is you said you miss him in that window, and that's the actual thing, not the phone itself. phones don't really "resolve themselves" on their own though, mostly cause it becomes the default and defaults are sticky. but this doesn't need to be some big confrontation either, it can just be you saying hey i miss that hour with you, can we protect it a little. good husband + present dad + no fighting is honestly a great foundation to bring this up from, you're not fixing a broken thing you're just redirecting a tired habit before it hardens into the norm
