My husband "helps" but I still manage everything. How do I explain the mental load?
Asked by couch_diplomat
He genuinely thinks he does his share because he does tasks when I hand them over. But he doesn't see the constant background management — remembering, planning, anticipating, delegating. When I try to explain it he looks at me like I'm speaking another language, or feels attacked like I'm saying he's a bad husband. He's not! How do I make this click for him?

And give it a name he can hold: "You do tasks. I do the noticing, planning, and remembering that decides which tasks — and that never clocks out. I need to hand you whole areas to own, brain included, not just jobs to do." Most decent husbands aren't refusing the load, they genuinely can't see it. Make it concrete and it usually lands.
the thing that finally made it click for mine: i stopped delegating for a week. didnt nag, didnt remind, just let his categories be his. the dish soap ran out. a birthday almost got missed. suddenly he SAW the invisible job that was keeping it all running, because for a week it wasnt running. not a punishment, just letting the load be visible. worked better than any explanation i tried
yeah this is such a common wall to hit. the thing that made it click for a lot of couples i've talked to is stop explaining and start showing. pick one whole domain, not a task, an entire domain, like all school stuff or all grocery/meal planning, and hand him the WHOLE thing including the noticing and remembering part, not just the doing part. don't remind him, don't make the list for him, let him feel what it's like to carry it in his head for a week or two. that's usually the moment it stops being an abstract complaint and starts being a real feeling he can't argue with. also try not to lead with what he's failing at, lead with "i need a partner in the noticing, not just the doing" so he doesn't hear attack, he hears invitation. it won't click in one conversation, it clicks in the doing.
this is great, and i'd add: make the handoff explicit with a script, like "starting sunday, all school stuff is yours end to end, forms, packing, remembering picture day, all of it." say the date out loud so there's no gray area. vague handoffs turn into you circling back to check, which just puts the load right back on you.
