why does my husband always take his mom's side over mine, even when she's clearly wrong??

Asked by here_to_vent_05
ok so this has been eating at me for weeks and i just need to know if this is normal or if im crazy. every single time his mom does something that hurts my feelings, like commenting on how i keep the house or making little digs about how im raising our kid, i bring it up to my husband and somehow within five minutes its turned around to me being "too sensitive" or "reading into it wrong." like last week she showed up unannounced while i was still in my pajamas and made a comment about how she "guesses some people sleep in all day" and when i told him it bothered me he just goes "thats just how she is, dont let it get to you." but if i say something even slightly off about his mom he gets weirdly defensive and quiet for the rest of the night. it just feels like no matter what happens, im the one who has to be the bigger person and he never actually stands up for me to her face. i love him and i dont wanna make this into some huge thing but i feel like im slowly losing it a little every time this happens and idk how to even bring it up again without it turning into a fight. has anyone dealt with this and actually gotten their husband to see it from your side?

girl you are not crazy, that's a real pattern and it's exhausting. here's the thing though - he's not defending her, he's avoiding discomfort. "that's just how she is" is code for "i don't want to deal with this." so the fight you're picking (whether she was rude) isn't actually the fight you need to have. the real conversation is about him, not her. try something like: "i'm not asking you to fight your mom, i'm asking you to back me up when i tell you something hurt me. right now i feel like i'm on a team by myself." make it about your marriage, not her behavior. and pick a calm moment, not right after an incident. he might still get quiet, but keep steering back to "i need you in my corner" - that's harder for him to dodge than "your mom was mean." you deserve a partner, not a referee job.
honey that's the truest thing i've read all week. i learned this the hard way after 30 years - you can't win an argument about his mama, but you can win one about your marriage. keep saying 'i need my husband' not 'your mother did wrong.' he can't argue with needing you either.
ok first, ur not crazy, that comment about sleeping in was rude and on purpose, moms who "just are that way" usually know exactly what they're doing lol. the thing thats getting lost here isnt really about his mom, its that he wont go to bat for you, and thats what stings right. when you say she hurt your feelings and he flips it to "ur too sensitive" hes basically choosing peace with her over protecting you, and that adds up over time, it doesnt just disappear cuz u let it go each time. i'd try bringing it up totally separate from an actual incident, like on a calm night say "i dont need you to fight with her, i just need you to back me up when it happens, even just a 'hey mom that wasnt cool'" make it about teamwork not blame. some guys genuinely dont see it till you name the pattern instead of the single moments. if he still wont budge after that, might be worth talking it thru with someone neutral, cuz this kind of thing wears people down quietly.
You're not crazy, you're unprotected, there's a difference. He's not gonna change from you explaining your feelings again, he'll change when you stop asking him to referee and just tell him plainly: "I need you to say something to her in the moment, not defend her to me after." That's the actual ask.
yeah this is it honestly. so many guys think keeping the peace = loyalty, but silence when your wife needs backup IS a side. it's not about him choosing you over his mom, it's him choosing to be an adult in the room instead of a bystander. that's a fair ask, not a crazy one.
