why does my husband just go silent when we argue?
Asked by sleepy_wife_73
so every time we get into it, like even a small disagreement, he just stops talking. not yelling, not storming off, just goes quiet and stares at the wall or looks at his phone. it drives me insane lol. i need to talk it out and he just shuts down completely, sometimes for like an hour, sometimes the rest of the night. i end up feeling like im arguing with myself. i dont think hes trying to be mean he just gets like this. anyone elses husband do this? how do you get them to actually talk instead of going silent on you

most helpful firsti wonder if the question underneath is less "how do i get him to talk" and more "how do i stop feeling alone when this happens." because that's the part that really stings, right, arguing with yourself in the room with him.
for a lot of people who go quiet, it's not withdrawal from you, it's overload, their system just floods and shutting down is the only exit they know. that doesn't make it fair to you, but it might explain why pushing harder in the moment tends to make it worse, not better.
something worth sitting with together, not mid-fight but after: what does the silence feel like from inside it? and could you agree on a signal that means "i'm still here, i just need twenty minutes" instead of nothing at all. that small structure sometimes gives the quiet a shape you can both live with.
yeah this is really common, honestly. a lot of people go quiet in conflict not to punish you but because they're overwhelmed and their brain just kind of taps out. arguing while he's already flooded like that usually gets you more silence, not less.
here's one thing worth trying: instead of pushing to talk it out in the moment, ask him ahead of time (when things are calm, not mid-argument) what he needs when he gets like that. something like "when we disagree and you go quiet, what's happening for you, and what would actually help?" then agree on a signal, like he can say "i need 20 minutes" and come back to it on purpose, not just disappear indefinitely.
it won't fix it overnight but it turns the silence into a plan instead of a wall. you're not crazy for needing to talk it through, he's just wired to need space first.
this is right. i go quiet too, not to shut her out, just my head gets loud and words stop working. the calm-moment conversation helped us more than anything mid-fight ever did. give him a way back in, not just a way out.
yeah my buddy's wife told me the same thing about him, so you're not alone here lol. a lot of guys just freeze up when things get heated. its not that he don't care, its more like his brain hits overload and shutting down feels safer than saying the wrong thing. probably learned that somewhere along the way too.
what helps is not chasing him for answers right when it happens. try saying "hey i can tell you need a minute, can we come back to this in 30" and actually mean it. gives him a way out without it feeling like he won or lost. then when he's calmer, ask him straight up what happens in his head when yall argue. don't push in the moment, that just makes the wall bigger. if its every single time and its wrecking things, a counselor could help yall find the words for it.
