why do me and my husband keep having the EXACT same fight over and over and nothing changes
Asked by gentle_brain_19
ok so this is gonna sound dumb but i need to just get it out somewhere. me and my husband have this one fight, like the SAME fight, its been going on for probably 2 years now and it just keeps coming back around like a boomerang. it starts about something small like dishes or him being on his phone at dinner but it always somehow spirals into the same core thing, him saying i nag too much and me saying he doesnt listen until i basically explode. we'll have this huge blowup, apologize, be good for like 3 weeks and then boom same argument different day different trigger.
ive tried staying calm, ive tried writing it down before i talk to him so i dont get emotional, ive tried just not saying anything and letting stuff slide but that just makes me resentful and then it comes out worse later. he says he feels like hes walking on eggshells and i feel like im talking to a wall lol. we're not bad together, like we laugh, we still like each other, this is just this ONE thing that wont die.
has anyone actually broken this cycle with their spouse? like is there something you did that actually worked or do you just kind of learn to live with the same fight forever at this point. im tired yall, just want some real talk from people who've been here

most helpful firstoh i know this loop so well, the dishes/phone thing is never actually about dishes or phones lol. its usually two people who both feel unseen in different ways, you feel like you're carrying stuff alone so you speak up, he feels like nothing he does is enough so he shuts down, and round and round. the fact that you've tried calm AND writing it down AND staying quiet means you've basically tried every 'communication trick' there is, so honestly i dont think the fix is a better technique, its probably talking about the fight itself, not during a fight, on a random tuesday when you're both chill. like 'hey can we talk about why this keeps happening instead of what happened this time.' sometimes couples need a third person to help untangle the actual pattern underneath, a good counselor is really just there to slow the loop down enough that you can both see it. you two clearly still like each other, that matters more than people think, don't lose steam yet.
